  1. risky issue candidly. The frustration person like her feels is very evident in her face. Despite commanding a handsome majority, where she saw there would not be any backlash from South if a proposal for a lasting solution being implemented, this current regime let go this golden opportunity; all this happening only to extend their family rule. What a diabolical situation; future a country being sacrificed for the well being of a family. That is what it is.

Hope Lady Sunila will not be tagged as Sri Lanka’s Navi Pillay, nor rather “unethical” for what she had been expressed here. I liked her way of describing the scope of LLRC: look at the failure of the 2002 cease fire and, by the way look at what happened in the last days of the war. If such a narrow terms of reference led the panel to come up with this outcome, what would have been the out come had it been asked to probe alleged allegations of the war by both sides. She confirms the very reason why this LLRC was formed in the first place. I would like to see the views of the pretenders that kept on saying Tamils do not have a specific problem, other than every Sri Lankan has. Only thing these so called patriotic individuals doing is aiding and abetting a regime to squander a golden opportunity presented in the history of SL. This is definitely an opportunity because never before we have had this much lessons learnt to figure out what is right thing to do for the future of this country.

Interestingly enough, she highlights the brutal fact that forces have used to the culture of impunity with which they both, the army and the police of this island go about their day-to-day business. Grease Devils, White van, etc are the out come of this culture.

Thank you Madam. Not only for your clear understanding of the plight of Tamils, who live here, but also expressing it without any fear or favour. Giving voice to voiceless is a humane thing. It is deplorable to note the very person nominated to provide the political will has become an obstacle to get the same. Such was these people’s fate.

  2. Dayan, Kalu, Rana, and other supporters of human rights violation:

Please note another U turn by Sri Lankan state’ see below excerpts of

Sri Lanka’s army said Wednesday it agreed for the first time to probe war crime charges against its troops and investigate allegations of prisoner executions made in a British TV documentary.

    http://www.emirates247.com/news/world/sri-lanka-agrees-to-probe-war-crimes-ahead-of-un-meet-2012-02-15-1.443319

The alleged war criminals are going to investigate war crimes and crime against humanity.

    Another LLRC is anticipated.

  3. Sunila is a chip of the old block. I used to know her father Charles Abeyesekera. He was a Civil service man who gave up administrative career to work as a human rights activist. Among other things Charlie co-founded the Movement for Inter -Racial Justice and Equality(MIRJE)Sunila follows in her fathers footsteps

  4. Fortunately, for the good name of Sri Lanka there are many learned Sinhalese who are prepared to risk their name and reputation to uphold peace and justice in the country. They do not speak for the Tamils and against Sinhala interests but raise their voice against injustice. They would do the same if the interests of the Sinhalese are at stake – as they did in 1971 and 1988/89. The bounden duty of the Govt is to listen to the voice of these social thinkers and take suitable action to reduce the people’s burdens. Why does it not?

Here she repeatedly speaks of the 50,000 houses gifted by the Indian Govt. Why is there the “unnecessary obstacles from various sections of the bureaucracy”. How far is the truth that the venal culture in the fore of our political life will move faster and these houses will be swiftly built only if Rs.100,000 is to change hands for each house. That is a staggering Rs.5,000 million (Rs.5 billion) which vultures within Govt ranks (some Tamil as well) that tell those leading the Uthuru Vasanthaya can be squeezed from these unfortunate IDPs from their “rich diaspora” relatives. What levels to which the country – once known for its clean governance that impressed men like Dr Lee Kuan Yew – has descended to?

Thank you Ms Abesekera for raising your voice on behalf of a section of your people who are crying out there for a roof above their heads – for reason, justice and compassion.

  5. It is indeed great of Sunila to state these truths with “courageous candour” as you describe it DBS.Sadly her voice is a voice in the wilderness of Rajapakse regime

  6. Kalu, Blacker, Dayan, Rana………………..all other supporters of human rights violations.

Do you think she has been threaten by LTTE or bribed by Tamil Diaspora, or both?

Does he have any personal issues with clan?

    Has she gone mad?

Is she a Sinhala/Buddhist? I don’t think so. She is a better person.

  7. Mekala says:

“It is indeed great of Sunila to state these truths with “courageous candour” as you describe it DBS.Sadly her voice is a voice in the wilderness of Rajapakse regime”

Why wasn’t even a single voice against LTTE when it ethnically cleansed the North and refused to let the innocent Tamil civilian flea from war zones?

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

Do not say that! There were many voices raised but people pretend they were not raised. I was the FIRST to focus on the plight civilians were going to face in Wanni as army advanced,LTTE retreated and area of habitat shrunk and turned into war zone.I appealed to LTTE openly many times “Let my people GO”. I appealed to both sides to think of civilians and cited the story of wise King Solomon and the two women claining motherhood over one child. Nobody listened including all these western powers clamouring for accountability. Worse still the LTTE supporters in the west are now human rights champions seeking “Justice”.

So dont just accuse. There were voices but nobody listened

  8. Good interview. She will raise some funds using whats said during the interview and go to town with the funds. Government ministers will use the contents of this interview and tell on stage that there are international pressure on Sri Lanka and they will also go to town with it. That is what has happened in the past. That is what will happen in the future. Different faces contributing in different ways for the dismay of the general public of Sri Lanka. People will remain at the losing end. I have closely associated the so called defenders of human rights of Sri Lanka and also the infamous regime for a decade.

  10. As Native vedda stated

“Kalu, Blacker, Dayan, Rana………………..all other supporters of human rights violations.

Do you think she has been threaten by LTTE or bribed by Tamil Diaspora, or both?

Does he have any personal issues with clan?

    Has she gone mad? ”

Don’t forget about Rohan G, Rajeewa W , GL , Sooriyaperuma , P Mahanama et al intellectuals in the list native vadda.

    Dear DBSJ ,

Do you know any thing about channel 4 ‘s new documentary movie (w/t) , which they announced last year ?

  11. DBSJ RESPONDS:

“So dont just accuse. There were voices but nobody listened”

    So did I.

We were the few people out of millions of Tamils around the world. I think it was in Tamilcanadian I first ask the LTTE to release the people to ICRC for save passage. I did so in August 2008 amids barrage of attack from the LTTE supporting stupid Tamil Diaspora.

I personally confronted a few LTTE supporters immediately after LTTE had ethnically cleansed North of Muslims. Even today the Tamil Speaking people would not admit what the LTTE did to Muslims was wrong.

    We were the lone voices.

  12. Native Vedda said…”Sri Lanka’s army said Wednesday it agreed for the first time to probe war crime charges against its troops and investigate allegations of prisoner executions made in a British TV documentary”

The HRW gives a clear picture today which is well known! (appears to be another government delaying tactic in the face of mounting international pressure)

The state drags its feet all the time until some outsiders kicks them where it hurts.

    Sri Lanka cries foul.

The state creates more problems and imposed on its people. Some outsiders save the state. State gloat on its borrowed victories for month on ends.

Repeat the above process as many time as you like.

Sri Lanka has been doing this for the past 63 years.

Time to time either it finds enemies or creates its own one inside or outside.

As long as Indians (for strategic reasons) are with Sri Lanka the state is able to wriggle out of all its failures and war crime charges. Mahinda demanded India treats Sri Lanka as a little sister. Therefore little sister is tolerated for being naughty.

One day big sister may want to have all that is owned by little sister.

  15. Dear Vernon:

Were you part of the Drafting Committee that sent that message to Queen
    Elizabeth II?
