KP, Soosai and Nadesan try for “ceasefire” while Praba and Pottu Amman become “silent”

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

The beleaguered Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) embarked on a frantic last-ditch effort to hold off the anticipated “final” operation by the Sri Lankan Armed forces that seemed to have ended in failure by the evening of Sunday May 17th 2009.

In spite of the LTTE’s efforts and international pressure to bring about a “ceasefire” of some kind , the Sri Lankan Government of President Mahinda Rajapakse resolved to stand firm in its decision to go ahead with its military operations to “finish” off the LTTE boxed into a tiny area not exceeding one sq km in area.

The Army commenced the final push on Sunday evening when its elite Special forces and commando units went into action against the last enclave of the LTTE in the Mullivaaikkaal area of Karaithuraipatru AGA division in Mullaitheevu district.

With the buzz surrounding unconfirmed reports of the LTTE leader’s demise gaining ground , knowledgeable politico-military-diplomstic circles were further intrigued by the sudden “silence” of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and his right hand man and intelligence chief Sivashankaramoorthy alias Pottu Amman.

Both seemed to have “gone off the radar” suddenly and it was three other LTTE stalwarts who came to the fore by getting involved in negotiations.

Earlier, Sathiyadevi Sivanesan the wife of Thillaiyambalam Sivanesan alias Soosai had told the Sri Lankan authorities that an injured Prabhakaran was at a location in Mullivaaikkal with over 300 LTTE cadres guarding him.

The Intelligence chief Pottu Amman was also at the same place.

Sathiyadevi had surrendred to the Navy with her son Sivanesan Maniarasan and daughter Sivanesan Sindhuja.

Subsequently a member of the LTTE’s Thileepan medical unit who surrendered to the Army had confirmed that an injured Prabhakaran along with Pottu Amman was staying at a particular location and supplied co-ordinates of the position.

The Army had then closed in and encircled the location.

While the Armed forces and Defence ministry circles remained tight-lipped about the exact status of the operation there was much excitement about the demise of Prabhakaran

Speculation was rife that Prabhakaran had either committed suicide or been killed and that announcement of it was being delayed until President Rajapakse’s return from Jordan.

The President was expected to make a public announcement on Sunday May 17th.

The Presidential address to the nation has now been scheduled for Tuesday May 19th.

Meanwhile the “silence” of Praba and Pottu has added further grist to the rumour mill.

One line of speculation is that both Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman are dead either by committing suicide or being killed by aerial bombardment or artillery shelling.

The other line of speculation is that they have escaped from the area by sea after breaching the naval cordon or have broken through military lines on land to reach the Weli-Oya jungles.

But LTTE political commissar Nadesan told a Journalist that Prabakharan was still in Mullivaaikkaal but had been moved to a safer, secret location.

Whatever the “final” position about Prabhakaran , this writer is of the opinion that his “fate” is likely to be shrouded in mystery.

There is little chance of his being captured alive and if he is no more the chances of his body being discovered are also remote.

It would be destroyed by loyalists rather than let it be paraded around by the Army.

If Prabhakaran has fled Sri Lanka or gone into the jungles even then he would go out of public “circulation” for reasons of safety and security.

Thus the questions “what happened to Praba” or “where is he” would continue to be unanswered yet generate much discussion and speculation.

The current “silence” itself could be a harbinger of the future.

Meanwhile three other LTTE stalwarts took over the task of “talking” even as Praba and Pottu were conspicuous through their absence.

The LTTE trio involved in negotiations were Sea tiger special commander Soosai, Political commissar Nadesan and International relations head Selvarasa Pathmanathan alias KP.

In a frantic bid to stave off the impending military drive the LTTE got in touch with influential “friends” in Britain and the USA to urge for a “humanitarian ceasefire” to avoid carnage and bloodbath of civilians.

It is reliably learnt that the LTTE while refusing to surrender to the Sri Lankan army offered to “surrender” to the UN, if Britain and the USA guaranteed the safety and security of its leaders, cadres and families.

The LTTE said it would not formally subscribe to the word “surrender” and instead use the phrase “silencing of its arms”.

The LTTE also pointed out that there were more than 10,000 civilians consisting of families of cadres, leaders, great heroes, supporters, LTTE and employees in the war zone . In addition there were around 25,000 other civilians.

Thousands of these civilians were injured and needed urgent medical treatment.

The LTTE urged a “pause” during which the injured could be evacuated through Irattaivaaikkaal in the north and Vattavaakal in the South.

The LTTE also offered to “silence their guns” if necessary.

Sea tiger special commander Soosai made an urgent appeal through a European TV.

Selvarasa Pathmanathan alias KP also issued a special statement offering a “ceasefire”.

Thereafter diplomats from Western nations made efforts to get Colombo to declare a temporary ceasefire to facilitate evacuation of injured civilians and to enable negotiations about surrendering to a third party.

Apart from diplomatic efforts, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown reportedly telephoned President Rajapakse for exploratory talks on the subject.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon also talked to the President.

Moon’s chief of Staff, Vijay Nambiar is already in Colombo to discuss humanitarian measures.

The twin issues concerning the International community are the need to prevent a potential civilian catastrophe and the urgent need to evacuate civilians including the wounded to safe areas.

Though more than 800 injured civilians have been evacuated almost all of them are in the walking wounded category.

Hundreds of seriously injured civilians are in the war zone suffering under desperate conditions.

Not even a single makeshift hospital is functioning there and most medical personnel have also been evacuated.

The Red Cross ship that goes in to transport injured people has not docked there for more than a week.

The ICRC has been denied entry since the war escalated, on the grounds, that the situation there is dangerous now

Attempts to bring about a humanitarian pause to enable the ICRC ship’s passage to the war zone has failed due to the refusal by armed forces to declare even a temporary ceasefire.

The Army is on the verge of defeating the LTTE and does not want the tigers to be let off the hook.

The situation is also terrible due to shortage of food, water and adequate, safe shelter.

According to information provided by medical personnel who came out recently around 2000-3000 persons have been killed and thousands more injured.

Dead bodies are being cremated in bunches or buried in mass graves.

There is also the potential threat to civilians as the military intensifies military operations.

The estimates of the Govt about the civilian population is at variance with other agencies.

The Govt had earlier said that only 15-20,000 civilians were living in the war zone. But the UN and ICRC estimated it to be upward of 50,000. Other NGO’s placed it as between 80,000-120,000. The Administrative AGA figures placed it officially at 165,000.

Now the very same government which said only 15-20,000 were there claims proudly about having evacuated 72,000 in three days.

This is like the govt earlier saying in April that only 70,000 civilians were in the war zone and then boasting that it has rescued more than 110,00 in three days.

The Government is now saying that all civilians are now evacuated and that only the tigers are remaining in the war zone.

In the eyes of Colombo all members of LTTE related families are not civilians but “tigers”. Unofficially the govt opines that around 10-15,000 “civilians” are in the war zone but refuse to acknowledge their civilian status.

The LTTE says there are around 2000 cadres, 10-12,000 LTTE related family members and a further 25,000 other civilians.

The Armed Forces and Defence establishment have also firmly ruled out a ceasefire whether temporary or permanent.

There was no question of surrendering to a third party and there would be no negotiations to arrange for a surrender.

The only option was for Tigers and “civilians” to approach the armed forces carefully with white flags and surrender.

The LTTE on the other hand has firmly declared that there would be no “surrender” to the Army. The “silencing of guns” would be to an Internationally facilitated initiative alone

If the armed forces go ahead with the anticipated military operation the tigers would regret the “loss of lives” and be sorry for “not being able to hold out any longer”.

There was some hesitation among enlightened sections of the government about going ahead with full- scale war in the face of international concern for civilians

Undertaking a military operation with full knowledge of potential civilian casualties and not taking adequate preventive measures was tantamount to a war crime, these sections feared.

Notwithstanding concerns about “war crimes” the upper echelons of the armed forces and defence establishment were firmly in favour of going ahead with the “final” mission to eliminate the LTTE.

It was pointed out that the armed forces were at a historic juncture being poised to conclusively defeat the “terrorist” movement plaguing the country for three decades.

If the Govt was to falter or fumble at this stage the nation at large would revolt besides aggravating dissension in military ranks,it was pointed out.

Therafter the Govt decided to go ahead as planned despite international pressure and warnings about “war crimes”.

The Army commenced its “final” operation on Sunday May 17th evening. Elite special forces and commando units are deployed to target an area less than a square km where the tiger hierarchy and bulk of cadres are said to be holed up.

President Rajapakse is hopeful of “victory” when he addresses the nation on Tuesday May 19th.

Meanwhile there are ominous signs of mass deaths as the armed forces zoom in on the target area. The armed forces will unleash massive firepower and airpower resulting in huge civilian casualties.

There is also a lot of fear that the tigers and supportive civilians could engage in mass suicide rather than surrender to or be captured by the armed forces.

Adding to these fears further was the sudden “rupture” in communications between KP and Soosai via satellite phone for the past few hours.

A humanitarian catastrophe seems to be unfolding even as the “end” of the conventional war phase seems to be in sight.

My god! These guys (LTTE) are no different to the NAZi’
s at the end of the WWII! just like Goering and Himmler, these guys were waiting for a “POST CARD” from the west offering them relief! What a bunch of lunatics!. I don’t believe that these guys -nadesan and KP are still saying that they are OFFERING a cease fire! Either they must be having nuclear weapons to destroy the SL Army or they are completely gone off their heads. Well, I don’t think they have Nuclear, do you Mr. Jeyaraj!
It’s just beyond belief that the LTTE still wishing for a way out of this. isn’t it time they realize that the west, including the US has no power whatsoever against the GOSL any more? that GOSL is bullish to the hilt because of the Russian, Chinese, Iran, nortyh Korea and few others behind them? isn’t it time the LTTE and it’s supporters give up without endengering anymore lives? Don’t they have at least the mentality of a 5 year old to understand that it’s plain stupid to continue this even for a day? and yet that GOSL would not give a hoot about their offer to surrender to some one else but to them?

  5. KishG says:

The ltte leadership brought this upon themselves. even now in their hour of defeat they cling to false pretense and posturing? they won’t surrender but rather “silence their guns”? they should surrender to the sri lankan forces unconditionally or fight to the bitter end. There is no other recourse now. The time for negotiation was 3 years ago.

Thanks for your unbiased reporting. I have been reader of your column for the last 3 to 4 years. Why didn’t they silence their guns before when they had the opportunity of surrendering to a third party. What a waste of lives. Keep on writing Mr Jeyaraj. I would like to have you in any group appointed by the government to look into Tamil grievences.

It is disgusting to view Sinhalese masses celebrating victory while fellow Sri Lankans are killed. I suppose they are not in the mood to consider Tamils as fellow citizens. Another treacherous development was the silence in Tamil Nadu media regarding the impending slaughter. What a disgrace, how do these Tamil Indian leaders live with themselves? Someone will have to answer for these atrocities.

God is the only hope for those civilians now.

It maybe hard for you to comprehend the relief of knowing that at least on the face of things there is a semblance of peace in the country – after 25 years, this is what 90% of the population wants..This has nothing to do with ethnicity, any peaceloving tamil would rejoice as well. You are blinded by your zeal for your Eelam that you naturally are surprised no one shares your dissapointment! – it should have been apparent when the whole world called the LTTE a bunch of terrorist, there is something fundamentally wrong in what they represent. You may not be happy about what happened to the LTTE, at least be happy that 270K of your kith and kin are safe! That is my rejoice and the hope that SL Military will be spared of any more casualties..This war has come at a great price, but hopefully we have seen the end of it..

DBSJ, I always enjoyed your very informative investigative reporting.

I have following comments for you.

It is absolutely hillarious that the remaining LTTE cadres want to surrender to a “Third Party”. DIid they fight the third party or the second party?.In the history of warfare defeated surrendered to the victorious, not to anybody else.

If you cannot surrender ,then fight to death or commit suicide. Is Soosai ,Nadesan afraid of thr cynide pill ,their “Sun Dog”, offered them?.Nadesan I always thought is a person between a rock and a hard place, not knowing what to do, but just so happened to find himself in the thick of it, reluctantly but having no will to refuse. But I cannot believe this so called hero Soosai ,the supreme commander of the of the much feared Black tigers ,begging the West to save his life.Suddenly he has found value in his life which he forgot of his fellow cardres. After sacrificing so many lives he wants to escape with his own?.If this is true, Soosai is nothing more than a pariah dog.

As I said many times befor, if a civilian takes up arms, either voluntarily or by force, they are no longer civilians. And refusing to leave the side of terrorists and living amongst them makes one a willing partcipant of the crimes.Paraphrasing Bush doctrine “either you are with us or against us”.AND tantamounts to “aiding and abetting ” terrorists. Then they to cannot be considered civilians. Unfortunately there could very well be a group of genuine civilians amidst this chaos, without a escape route. Such is WAR!. BUt who is to be blamed?. LTTE.

This defeat is far greater in significance than the historic war of DUTUGEMUNU-ELARA. LTTE and and their supporters will be licking their wounds and dying miilion deaths in sorrow, for centuries to come.

While it is worthy to respect thoese who died fighting fearlessly against mounting odds, for what they believed in,however wrong it may be the cause, again, this letter will not be complete without congratulating my childhood friend Maj.Gen.Kamal Gunaratne and his 53rd. And also the all others who flanked him for a job well done.

Don’t’ cry for us Sri Lanka
And you made Chelvanayagam and Co go on peaceful protests. You ridiculed them and you failed to meet our demands then…

    1972

    Intelligent Tamils deprived of
    Income generating careers
    Inclining Tamil youth towards militancy

Rather conveniently Tamils collectively cast their lot with the bloody tigers – whether they openly supported or not – just as the German people did when Hitler was in full swing.

The Fuhrer had to die and the people had to taste the humiliating defeat and to realize they were wrong. It is only now that Germans feel ashamed of their actions.

VP must die for the Tamils to be set free as well.

  29. Bros says:

KP’s present attempts should not be iterpreted as last minute effort to save the LTTE and its leadership. On the contrary, KP is doing everything to take charge of all the war fortunes made by LTTE in the last 3 decades. He will be an international mafia with unlimited riches.

  30. Panhinda says:

Agree with #30, LTTE blood money collected in Swiss accounts will grow legs and begin running away. I think its Velu’s wife’s family had the key to the safe. If some of it can be salvaged then can be used for benefit of needy people.

  31. Sujatha says:

    Kadavul has a point.
The war might have been won but the road to peace looks very bleak ,unless, Srilanka offers a meaningful solution to the Tamils, let alone accepting the fact that there is a ‘problem’.

These fools do really think that Obama will come to rescue them? Why? What do they have to be saved from this earth. Why outsiders should think of saving war criminals?

These fools had not seen people other than Tamils. So they think the international community is also full of emotional donkeys like Tamils. Does it not prove my point that these LLTE guys are bunch of idiots and muds from day one. How dare KP who himself is wanted by Interpol is making appeal after appeal fro rescue and there are is a crowd in front of White House now thinking that LTTE is still alive!!!

Srilankan Government has done an irrepairble damage to the Tamils. Tamils will not talk this because they will be under terrorism act but inner soul of them are still going to cry.

I am pretty sure this is not a end result. Srilanka will feel this for anothe 25-50 years in different dimension.

This should not have been done my means of this many lives and scars between the communities.

    Hi Jey,

After I read your article 3 thoughts came to my mind.
    1. Ceylon Tamils must get self determination
    2. Tamils demonstrations throughout the world must stop now.
    3. Ceylon Sinhalese must get warning about India.
    Ceylon Tamils means:-
    - Religion Hindu, Muslim Christian
    - Class Upper caste Rich and Lower caste Poor
    - North East and Estate Tamils

How to get self determination for Tamils: –
Lots of Tamils convert to Islam
Muslim nations will send help to rebuild our economy
If Sinhalese starts communal riots Muslim country definitely ask about it
BJP and Hindu Sivasayna blame Indian congress for its policy in Sri Lanka
Under one religion all Tamils can speak in one voice
    Sri Lankan population changes
    Sinhalese 60%
    Tamils or Muslim 39%

    Tamils Demonstration
Caste fanatic Tamil Congress then Federal Party after that capitalist minded LTTE are the leaders for Tamils so far. That is why people still thinking west somehow will help us. We do not have oil or uranium or gold then how west is going to help us. Moreover Indian and China has big population that needed for west to sell its product. Only positive outcome our people now knew the true face of west. Everything in west determined by money, fancy words like democracy, human rights, child abuse are used to mesmerize people. Demonstration creates inconvenience that let to racism.

    Warning to Sinhalese
    Tamils must expedite Indian aggression.
Tamil leader like Sampathan must go to India and meet DMK chief and ask him to send Indian troops to clear land minds.
DMK will use this request for its propaganda saying they are helping Tamils.
Indian congress will send troops not to clear land mind but slowly going to Singhalese area. Upon Indian shows it true color, left wing Singhalese stat talking about Sri Lankan sovereignty. I thing that is the best time to talk to Singhalese about Tamils self determination.

  37. Nitharshan says:

    CNW (Comment 14),

It is difficult for individuals like yourself to comprehend the feelings of deep anguish at the loss of civilian life, I have resigned to the fact a long time ago that some individuals are just plain “stupid” and “callous.” What peace are you referring to? A bloodbath is not peace, perhaps you feel blood will wash away all the problems and deliver some demented notion of peace for a select group of people. More than 90% of the people want peace, but this is not peace. This is a slaughter perpetrated to pacify a bloodthirsty electorate. There is no justification for the intentional killing of innocents. I utilize the term “intentional” simply because it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to predict mass civilian deaths, the military establishment is guilty of war crimes. The LTTE is not an excuse for war crimes. If you disagree, please attempt to defend your “heroes” in court with the LTTE excuse. This war has everything to do with ethnicity, from independence to today, there has been no political solution to alleviate grievances of a colossal power imbalance between ethnic groups in the Northeastern provinces. Not just “peace loving Tamils” but any stable human being would welcome peace but of course as I mentioned you have some sort of demented notion of peace. I’m not blinded by any bias, I recognize the atrocities committed by both sides. Currently, it is not the LTTE that is killing civilians on a mass-coordinated scale in the south but the GOSL in the North. Once again, if you agree that the GOSL is the legitimate authority in the Northeast, then killing citizens because they were being used as human shields demonstrates culpability in war crimes and callous disregard for innocent lives along with a silent admission of discarded responsibility for citizens. I’m not justifying Tamil Eelam, it is your government. The LTTE has been branded as a terrorist entity but utilizing the same standards for such a qualification, do you think the government is not a terrorist entity. If not, your ignorance knows no bounds. It is fundamentally wrong to offer a military solution to a fundamentally political problem. Do you really want me to just believe that IDPs are safe in Nazi-style long-term concentration camps? Why is there no access to independent media even at this stage? Why was a British media team deported for reporting on alleged abuse of IDPs? What do you have to hide? If oppression continues then we will definitely see the reemergence of the LTTE or some other rebel outfit. You cannot stop guerrilla groups through military solutions alone. There is a mandatory political approach that goes hand-in-hand with a military response. Guess which requirement the GOSL failed?

A separate state is not a magic solution but the Southern masses must “comprehend” that a military victory is not a magic solution. There will be consequences to relying solely on military means, but you enjoy your demented peace at the cost of innocent blood.

  38. KishG says:

What sujatha and other’s don’t realize about the celebrations is that it is the outlet of a long suffering nation being freed from under the yoke of constant threat and intimidation by terrorists. It is quite fit that Sri Lankans of all races celebrate this historic moment. It is not only Sinhalese that celebrate but Tamils, Muslims and all Sri Lankans. It is not a question of Sinhalese celebrating a victory over Tamils but one of the Sri Lankan nation celebrating it’s new found freedom. An Indpendence Day if you will. I would take the fact that all races in many parts of the country are celebrating this to be a very positive harbinger of what the future may hold for our country!

  39. rawana says:

    Naan Kadavul ,
    You are distorting the history.
Sinhala was made official language to correct a historical mistake done by F–KING British invadors. Tamil was then made an official Language too. Even in India Tamil is not an official Language.
Tamils were given privileges by Bristish and 95% of government servants were Tamils until 1960′s. YOU WERE FIGHTING FOR YOUR UNDUE PRIVILEGES – NOT FOR RIGHTS.

Assume you were fighting for your rights (though not correct), if violance was the way you selected you now got what you deserved.
Most of those problems you are highlighting as “descrimination” are administration issues which both Sinhala and Tamils face in common.
THOSE WHO SELECT VIOLANCE MUST BEAR ITS CONSEQUENCES.

  40. Suba says:

Thanks for your info about situation in SL.

I am sure after LTTE terrorism, poor Tamil and Sinhalese need to spend more to build trust to live together in Sri Lanka by respecting each other.

However, both Tamil and Sinhalese diaspora always will talk about extremist nationalistically ideas to have their own country.

It is easy to talk as they will never live there but may visit once in two years for few weeks for low cost vacation time with their families.

If people love their country this is time to go back and rebuild it without taking about how you have own holiday homethere/

    Why can’t we live seperately?

I am not joking here: Some questions popping up to me.

Srilankan Government did this many casualities to Tamils. Why LTTE did not target innocents in South like SL Gov did for Tamils?

Is this Government capable of protecting all Sinhala people if the LTTE plan to do so called terrorist acts in South in retaliation?

Is this Government capable of managing the Tamils after doing this many scars to Tamils?

How this Government is going to handle “Terrorism, Extremism, Ambush, and raids in the future?

Did this Government really understand what is the real meaning of “Finish off of Tigers” , an organization is successfully existing for last 35 years fighting for a legitimate aspirations of a community, may be by means of brutal war.?

I think there are too many questions unanswered but Rajabakse earned an unshakable vote bank for his next term for sure.

wow what a sense of humor some of these daiapora guys have…..your late sun god ethinically cleansed 150,000 muslims from jaffna…..now you want tamils to become muslims……what strategic masterminds you guys are….similar to the sun god selling the tamil votes for Rs 180 million and electing a president who knew how to deal with filthy terrorists…..you should go sit in a little inflatable swimming pool as well….you too may have an eureka moment.
if tamils had shown some flexibility, common sense and decency back in the mid 90s and early 2000s how different things may have been…
to comment #19…..don’t cry for me tamil eelam….you just shrank to 100m * 100m….just enough room for a little inflatable swimming pool…..

  44. Exiled Patriot says:

    Live Separately
Sure. That is an option. But in all my time working in Colombo with lots of jaffna tamils, I never sensed a great divide except the war itself. No that it’s out of the way, perhaps we can live together. Geo-political reality of life in SL is that the sinhalese are the majority.

  45. Ananda-USA says:

    Hey miller,

Don’t worry your little head about all these “questions” you raised. We’ll take care of them…NO PROBLEM…OK?

If your highness wants to live in isolation in a mono-ethnic Tamil VALHALLA….the place to go is acroos the Palk Straits, in Tamil Nadu. Wonderful place for Brahmins only, I hear.

But, if you can force yourself to live with us non-Tamil racially impure Islanders, you are very welcome to stary and live with us as an EQUAL citizen with EQUAL RIGHTS which come with EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES to the safety, security and the common aspirations of ALL CITIZENS of the Motherland. OK?

  46. Naan Kadavul says:

    Sam Selvanayakam

Looks like I have touched a sensitive nerve in your dumb brains.

Fellas – go wash your filthy mouths and get a reality check.!!

  47. miller says:

    Different types of LTTE Supporters:

    1. Die for LTTE. Do anything for them. They are always right. They cannot be wrong. Anyone criticizes LTTE are their enemies. (Around 20%).
    2. They are only ones fighting for the Tamil’s rights; so it’s our duty we have to support them. Believing that they are capable of negotiating with Singalese. (Around 50%)
    3. These guys did some mistakes but that’s ok because they have a noble cause fighting for the freedom. But do not completely believe in their strategy (Around 20%)
    4. I agree they did a good job but it could have been done by other means. I dont believe they are the sole reps of Tamils (Around 10%)
    5. I know they have a reason for carrying the arms but I do not agree on this because Ahimsa is the path. (Around 10%)

This is what I ascertained after closely monitoring this 35 years of their process.

If I need to conclude, I would say these all five types still exist formidably and made up of 60 years of history.

Lemma1: I met a person in Toronto who had his parents and 4 sisters in Vanni. All six did not die in one day or in one shell. One Monday started with his Mom and the following Saturday his last sister died. For sure this guy is silent in short term, what is his strategy in the long term? In DBS language, another “uncleared area”

  48. Sinha Weera says:

    ARMS, WHAT ARMS?

The once ruthless LTTE is now reduced to a stand up comic act, getting funnier by the minute. First there’s the Tamilnet with its ever changing human casualty numbers and now this “we do not surrender” but just a “silencing of it’s arms”. My question is what arms are they talking about? Apart from the ones they set on fire, the Sl army has taken everything else from them. So the only arms they have are the joined to their shoulder, and they should just rase them both and surrender!

    HAIR RAISING QUESTION
I agree with DB that Prabah’s situation will be a mystery. It always is if history tells us anything. After all there’s always been the question of this last incarnation of “sun god” was actually a real one or a fake stand in one. I know the usual theories of the height difference between the two, but my personal take on after seeing most of prabhakaran’s early photos is that this guy loved his hair. Whenever he posed for pictures like a Tamil movie idol posing with guns etc.(which he seemed to have loved to do), he never wore his hat. He always had a full head of hair, even in full military uniform. However lately since the rumours of his demise a few years back, this incarnation is always photographed with a hat on. You cannot even see much hair jutting out of the side. So either Prabha suddenlu started loosing all this hair within a few months or this stand-in is a complete boldie.

My point is that either way it really doesn’t matter at the end of the day. The battle is lost and the war is won. Now it;s time to re-build the nation, include Tamils and start the healing process!

  49. Jacob says:

I’m appalled by the International communities inaction

What ever said and done the foreign countries believed the Sri-Lankan Government the blatant lies it said to world as being the truth and believed them, Because they were suppose to be the established Government who are legally entitled to protect it own civilians, but now the World sees the true nature of SRI-Lankan Government.

But now at least the world can see for itself of what barbaric acts the GoSL is capable of, the relentless unleashing it’s barbaric acts against the poor unarmed civilians, not allowing the UN and reporters into the No Fire Zone, it seems like the Government of SL itself doesn’t understand the meaning of NO FIRE Zone.

The GoSL are the real criminals, the Government has the whole responsibility of protecting it’s citizens FIRST what ever may by the objective it is trying to achieve it has to safe guard it’s citizens First, this does not seem to be the case, Sri-Lanka government has failed in protecting it’s citizens as the first priority.

The ethnic riots in 1956, 1975,1977, 1983, all goes to prove to the international community, is that GoSL has failed miserably GoSL cannot be trusted in addressing the Tamil question, “Please Don’t continue to Make the Mistakes you did in the past by not taking any actions on the voiceless and the suffering Tamils, you will end up seeing the Tamils of Sri-Lanka being SYSTAMATICALLY ENTHNICALLY CLEANSED by the Sri-Lanka Government…ALL THE ETHNIC HATRED unleashed over the Tamils by GoSL will continue, if the International community doesn’t intervene and mediate a lasting solution, so that Tamils can live with their civil rights and the rights to self determination realised.

PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW THE SRI-LANKAN Government to it’s own devices with the Tamils, they have proved it over and over again beyond any doubt to the world communities that they are incapable of doing the minimum of at least giving the Tamils their fundamental rights let a lone GoSL trying to protect the Tamils which they are professing to the World that they are doing.

Sri Lankan Government in it’s attempts of just scoring in the war is blinded on it’s utmost responsibility as the Sole government in Charge of the country on ensuring that it’s civilian are protected, hence it is guilty of violating international law and is guilty of war crimes against it’s own, hance I appeal to the International Communities to take control of the Carnage that is taking place in Sri –Lanka and intervene.

Please help us Tamils from the war revenged criminal Government of Sri-Lanka in it’s impunity and it’s communal thugs are drunken by the innocent blood of it’s Tamil minority Citizens and are coming at us over and over again to kill us and make us destitute, Like a drunken husband hunting his own wife down, what is blinding the GoSL a mere victory in the War, of which it is uncertain how it’s future is going to span out.

How gullible the UN can be, taking into consideration with views of it’s Chinese and Russian member who have themselves done such atrocities against their own people like the Tiananmen square massacre and the ethnic cleansing by the Russians in Georgia, the Bosnian – Hezcovenien war. The UN intervened in the Bosnian issue then china or other countries didn’t say that it was an internal issue, why aren’t they not sharing the same view as the other members of the UN security council, it is because they are putting their own interests over these burning issues of the Tamils.

The birds of the same feather flocks together, so is the Russian, china, Sri Lanks trio.

I appeal to the international communitee to intervene and take the Sri-Lankan Government and charge and try them at the international courts of Justice for war crimes and Genocide committed against the Tamils.

The LTTE at least considered laying down arms to the third Party, this was done in consideration of civilians’ safety, but the Sri-Lankan Government continued it’s Killing machine tactics showing it’s hidden agenda to the world that on the verge of finishing off the LTTE let as get us kill as much Tamil civilians’ as possible (part of there systematic ethnic cleansing program).

This has been the GoSL’s approach right throughout the war that is why no \ negotiations nor peace efforts worked, because the SL Government wanted to defeat the LTTE at any cost, it is a blood thirsty militant Government, functioning under the camouflage of Democracy.

US and UN has to realise that it is a blatant fact that Sri Lanka wants to suppress media freedom, and not allow religious groups and foreign media and humanitation assistance is because the GoSL is guilty of obvious war crimes that it trying to hide those atrocious war crimes they committed against the Tamils , but they cannot hide it for too long.

I urge the UN to bring to books the SL government on charges of War Crimes committed against the Tamil civilians.

The Tamil aspirations for self determination and equal rights and balance of power has been swept under the carpet by Sri-lanka joining under the banner of Bush administration’s fight against Terrorism ordeal, and under the name of fighting terrorism government has ruthlessly taken into state terrorism against the Tamil.

Please UN,US, UK, France, Austria, Norway, Australia, and the rest of the civilised world please help us Tamils from the Clutches of the Barbaric Sinhala dominated thugs who run the GoSL.

  50. Rajith says:

We as Sri Lankans must be grateful to the SLDF for defeating the LTTE which has been a menace to the country in every respect.
It opens up opportunity to grow peace among the communities and work toeards the development of the country.
Most of the Tamil Diaspora who haev been silent because of the threat of the LTTE must comeup now and take teh lead with Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and Burghar communities to make a country without terrorism but prosperity.

  51. Stargazer says:

Who cares about the LTTE leaders ? Anyone who joins the movement donates his/her life to the movement. When a member of the movement is living he/she fights for the objectives of the movement. On that journey, death awaits at every corner. LTTE’ers do not fear death. In fact the top leaders at this point in time, must be elated that this part of their journey is coming to an end. Death only affects those who thirst for the blood of others. Those who gloat over the death of others fear death itself. Long live Praba.

That you can’t live anywhere without making a mess of the place? that you are the only people still in 21st centuary can’t sit down with your fellow tamil because of the cast? get a brain, may be a one from a dead donkey, you might be able to think bit intelligently then…
mate, you lost, you lost your war you started 1200 years ago. If you want to live in Sri lanka, learnt to live with the other communities. Well, selfish idiots like you who live in the west can’t understand the suffering of your own kind in SL due to the blood money you sent to fatten up the LTTE pigs. Well they came to slaughter, now if you care a pinch about the innocent tamils in SL, stop your bickering you w..ker, and send your money to the GOSL to help those rescued tamils to get a better life, they might even settle for the same life YOU TOOK AWAY from them by feeding the filthy terrorists.

  54. james says:

This is the best time for all of us…

Everody understand and accept that 30 years is too long and we have lost everything for three generations.. If LTTE continues to refuse to any short of negotiation, we have to loose another 3 generations with a loss of more than 100,000.

So now the government’s responsibility and it must table its solution in real terms, which would make long lasting peace and be able to reconcile all of our differences.

  55. shanthi krish says:

the LTTE diaspora has now appointed an arms dealing & drug smuggling criminal called KP as their sole rep before the deaths of VP is even confirmed. it seems that they are digging themselves deeper into the hole that they have already dug themselves into.

it is the local sri lankan tamils that should be given prominence. not international criminals who globe trot & dream of grandoise tamil kingdoms that will harm & ultimately wipe out the SL tamils. these are LTTE diaspora business men who do who look down on tamil peasants.

the tamils should revolt against these leaders & opt for a peaceful path forward.

The GOSL for their part should identify the economic strengths of the north eastern regions & give prominence to raising the economy of a once hard working & enterprising people who worshipped education & hard work.

for example GOSL should not repeat JR’s mistakes of importing onions, potatoes etc & harm the northern farmers. the productive efforts of these once hard working people have to be identified, financed & protected. this is the only way forward. tamils for their part should learn to give up hatred & violence if they want to get anywhere in a future sri lanka.

it’s high time the LTTE tamil diaspora realised that a continuation of their unattainable vengeful agenda will end up grinding the SL tamils to dust. the local tamils will have to finally live with the sinhala & muslims & face the consequences of LTTE diaspora crimes against GOSL. they will have to ultimately pay for diaspora hatred. the diaspora will be fine in their respective countries.

the duty of any expatriate community is to help raise the living standards of their relatives back home. LTTE diaspora deliberately plans the opposite & hopes to ride western sympathy to gain recognition. it has now back fired. a shameful state of affairs.

if the LTTE tamil diaspora tries to take the rajapakse brothers to an international court the chances are that they will fail. the main reason being the weakning western power & the rise of asian power.

but if somehow they manage to take the extremely popular rajapakse’s to international courts it will create another round of revenge by the sinhala against the tamils . this time it won’t be violent like 1983. it will be different but more harmful. the colombo & diaspora tamils should learn the fine art of decision making if they want to live with their heads held high in the future. they should learn from the terrible mistakes of thalaivar.

the chances are that MR will offer them a proud & fruitful future tomorrow.

    they should take it.

  56. Kombuwa says:

Hope the Tamils have learnt a good lesson!

  57. Ravi S says:

even the blood which had poured down his shot off eye & clotted his moustache looks too clean & controlled. almost like make up. the army probably cleaned the blood from the fleshy areas of the face so that the masses could identify him & comfirm the death.

  63. miller says:

We have another 50 more years to talk about this. For sure we will be good friends as good neighbours and doing trade between two countries. Mango will be exported to Srilanka, Sinhalese love Jaffna Mangoes.

  64. Kumar says:

When I read posts such as #50 I am saddened that there are so many Tamils who just parrot the 1956, 1977, 1983 etc violence against Tamils as evidence of a conspiracy by Sinhalese to dominate and destroy the Tamils, and justify every evil committed by the Tigers against fellow human beings whether Tamils, Sinhalese or Muslims.

There was never any question of SL Govt discrimination in introducing Sinhala only, standardisation, sanctioning violence against Tamils etc – but the Tamils’ approaches to address the issues have been stupid and driven by a false sense or superiority and raw emotions whipped up by Tamil political leaders.

I am a Tamil from NorthEast, lived in Colombo and other Sinhala areas, been subjected to harrassment and threats by the SL armed forces, and escaped death narrowly in 1983. So many of my relatives, friends and known people have been killed by SL forces and our house destroyed. Perhaps those armed forces personnel justified these acts on the grounds of extreme provocation – landmines explosion, sniper fire, lobbed grenades etc from the Tigers. I have enough grounds to have hatred and anger towards the SL forces (or the Sinhalese generally) – but I don’t.

I have also seen firsthand the brutality and the butchery of one armed Tamil group against another, and the killing of every moderate Tamil leader, some of whom I’ve known personally, with one excuse or another. Tamils, especially those in the diaspora, contributed to the Polpotist approach of the LTTE when every difference in opinion was categorised as treachery. By their actions, haven’t the Tigers and their sympathisers lost all moral right to talk about 1956, 1977, 1983?

I have also seen the brutality with which the SL Govt crushed the JVP in late 1980s and witnessed freshly shot dead, still burning bodies as well as bodies floating in the river in the outskirts of Colombo. There was widespread belief that over 60,000 died in the uprising. I have shuddered then at the thought of a SL Govt deciding enough was enough and take the LTTE on a full frontal assault – 20 years later that is what we have seen.

If diaspora Tamils continue to promote a separate state to be the solution, then all that means is even more death and destruction for the Tamils who live in SL. But I don’t believe the Tamils in SL will fall for that unless the SL Govt does something atrociously stupid.

Now it is that LTTE leadership has been eliminated in the Island with the Massacre ( cold blooded killing as they have been killed without being resisted, the same way of Rohana Wijeweera), the fight to the finish is over.

I would like to ask the White house and President Obama, now the end game is over and as you said, GoSL has finished the killing of Tiger leaders, would White house intervene to secure the rights of the Tamils, Autonomy either Full federal system or Separate state (per Obama, united country is not guaranteed, and I would like to see this)

I am some what puzzled to see what was the LTTE thinking all these days when they had the time time and resource to spare some of their lower level leaders.

    I Guess MONOPOLY.

DBS, could you answer my earlier question.

Have you seen the GENOCIDE or anything and you are going to name this as simple war crime but genocide???

  82. Lalith K says:

EU presses war crimes of Sri Lankan government ! !

It was just a word from Hilery Klinten as ‘sorry’ for the Killing many innocent in civilians in Afganistan. No war
    can be winable without casualities.

By knowing the reality, why the EU is at least not questioning Americans in such events?
This varying policy showing the EU’s double sided
policy and naive way of controlling the third world
countries in order to keep the economical distance.

If the Tamil disapora thinks EU and Hilery is with them
for their betterment, it will be a dangerous mistake.
Tamil dispora should not be trapped and understand
this ‘divide by policy’ in 21st centuray. Rather the peace
loving Tamils should be gather around the Sri Lankan
government and Sinhalese people to enhance the
political, economical status of the country.

  86. Ravi says:

It is a sad/good news for evey one concern about the conflict.
Tigers may be wrong. The legitimate government (been told) should care about innocent civilian.
In future, there will be no solution to the tamils. All sri lankan tamils in sri lanka may be treated as second class civilian.
The whole world do not speak about the human life in Sri lanka and don’t take any genuine action. Because why?… all tamils are tigers?.

Unless a meaningful solution (is unlikely) is offered to tamils, the war does not stop. It would start after some years.

In this last hour of the LTTE let us remind the past. My ex comrades from Trotsky movemenst in Sri Lanka very aptly told us that JVP and Wijeweera highjacked the Worker’s fight and inducted “Antare”- inter university Student’s union in SL univercities as main fighting force. Wijeweera departed from JVP stance on Ealam question and embraced blatant nationalism. (Exit of Bopage etc) End of 1989 his caders attacked and killed civilians and Army members without mercy. End result – Wijeweera and top members burned to death by Sl Army.
Prabhakaram killed Maheshwaran and Pathmanabha and highjacked Tamil Struggle and embraced blatant Tamil nationalism. I met a Tamil Trotskyte from Jaffna in State Clerks Service union building near Lake House book shop. (Rajaye Lipikaru Seva Sangamaya). He said Prabha will never get Elam if he is going to kill every one who is not agreeing to him and kill Sinhala Civlians like this. If you are still around please send a comment. You deserve it to be remembered. Amy all the dead from this war may rest in peace and (if possible) attain nibbana (So you don’t get this suffering again)

As for those Sinhala nationalistic comments and LTTE supporters – let’s remind again – your way did not work. If sinhala nationalists think they won – no they did no win withert. It is because ordinary people did not like Prabha and LTTE any more so they have supported government not you. That support can change any time.
It is now upto people like DBSJ to fill the void – CORRECTLY.

  90. sunthar says:

Congratulations DBS.You need to be recognised and rewarded by our government. You and few of our Tamils had the courage in fighting terrorism.
    good work

  91. Pirabha says:

    Dear DBSJ,

Now people like you have great responsibility to protect the Tamils in the Island from Extinction. Pls make sure the Sinhella chauvinism does not cunningly divide the Tamils
    and make our voice weak.

  92. Sajith says:

Doesn’t anyone get the picture? just read throught the comments…
Most anti-GoSL sentiments (obviously by tamils) are to say ‘beware, this scourge will rise again’..
Most comments by other cultures – sinhalese, muslims, burghers and even some tamils, are to say, ‘Let’s work together as brothers and sisters of one Sri Lanka and ‘ rebuild our country’

Who is sounding militaristic and revengeful and violent here?

  93. K.P. Sundarambal says:

    Yellow Yeveryone,

I understand the frustration on both sides, but the fact remains that Prabaharan’s efforts have failed. Holding out at this time and asking for a ceasfire is not really solving any problem. This is an effort merely to keep themselves alive, but do they realize the loss of lives they have inflicted on others for the last 30 years? Even so, I do not wish these leaders death. But they need to be prevented from launching any further freedom efforts because they are simply not capable, not only of fighting a winnable war but even reading the minds of the own people they claim to lead.

As for the Sinha tribe, they should cool it a bit and reach out to the Dhemalas to ease the pain of loss of life. The dhemala tribe has been marginalized by the sinha tribe for long enough; now the dhemalas need to be comforted and given a lot of high level positions in the govtment and private sectors to soother their egos (afterall, dhemalas think they are the same as Jews! This immense ego needs a lot of coddling).

Whatever happens, let’s hope we don’t continue to engage in armed combat and can leave peacefully with each other.

  94. Kumar Sriskanda says:

Tamils were living under fear of LTTE all these years due to its ruthlessness. Hence our freedom of expression was curtailed fearing reprisals at the hands of the LTTE. We genuinely feared that the LTTE would harm us and our families back home if we speak freely.

In a way today is the day of relief from that fear forever. Hence let us stop commenting on pseudonyms and start writing in our own names. Ah! What a relief.

  95. Wellwisher says:

Thousands of Tamil civilians have been killed by the SL Govt. through the SL forces. Women, mothers, school going children have been raped by the SL army. Mothers and children have been sperated in the Nazi stylye concentration/holding camps. Families have been destroyed. Whole areas where Tamils have been living have been destroyed. The Govt. of Sri Lanka is hellbound in destrying the native Tamils of Sri Lanka. You have sowed the seeds for the next generation of hardened freedom fighters – in LTTE or some other format. It might take another 10 years but I’m sure when you murder civilians and kill your own blood, the survivors will not forget or forgive you.. After all this you think the Tamils and the Singhalese are going to live in harmony – what a laugh. The Govt. says that they have rescued the civilians!! – while the singhalese celebrate the demise of the LTTE I could not see a single Sri Lankan Tamil celebrating that they have been liberated from the Tigers or let alone the fact that LTTE has been destroyed.

  96. Tamil Speaker says:

I think most of the Singhalese mind is still in 1983. Even after this country has lost many lives, they celebrate the victory against Tamils even though many Tamils lost the life in this country particularly in Wanni. If you still can’t change your mind and respect the Tamils, you can not have fortune to this country. You won the LTTE because of the support of India, China, Pak and others in the name of terrorism. But, you did not win the feelings of Tamils. If you still think the Tamils are second citizen, you will face your destiny one day. India may be your friend today but it will turn one day against you like a wheel.

  97. Parakrama says:

The great human catastrophy predicted by the western leaders, the UN representatives and the Terrorists spokesmen has not materialised! The thousands that the terrorist spokesman said was in the no fire zone do not seem to be there!!The final lie of the terrorists and their supporting merceneries have been nailed down!!!Let all those who made such pronouncements come out and apologise to the people of Sri Lanka for insulting them.

The whole truth about civilians killed and injured is yet to be revealed…………….DBSJ

  98. yogi says:

    RIP Prabha:
Tamil struggle is real. The means you followed are different and unacceptable, sadly that was the only way to ignite some political minds.
    Lets us think about a TWO”STATE”(Federal first/Seperate last)SOLUTION.
Thats what IC is talking about Israel & Palastine.

  99. Ranka Devid says:

may all carnage end with this bloodshed, may all eyes see every human as a being….not different from him or herself , each with a rich life the god has given , with all the refinement and wisdom to preserve life . May the hearts that burn with the loss see some light at the end of the tunnel , so love, joy and happiness be with them. May the eyes gone blind with victory regain vision of wisdom to be compassion and caring. May the clouds of tribalism go away for good so the mild rays of humanity kiss this forsaken land….

  103. dingiri says:

Did Banda think not giving equal status to the Tamil language would cause Prabakaran to take up arms 20 years later?

Did Prabakaran think blowing up the 13 soldiers would cause the awful riots against Tamils in the south?

Did the rioters believe their actions will only result in the LTTE gaining support and strength escalating the conflict beyond imagination?

Did the LTTE believe their attacks on the Army and civilians will only strenghten the Army’s resolve to finish them off?

Well, the army has now finished the off the LTTE. Its anybody’s guess what the next phase will be. Whatever it is, lets not be too naive and accept its all over.

  104. Ruby says:

I have been reading all the comments. The comments that denounce LTTE also agree that LTTE is the one who is the protector of Tamils as they are the one to surrender to safeguard the TAMIL civilians in cross fire. This ia funny as they all agree that the SL forces consist 99% ethnic Sinhalese have neither care or responsible for the Tamil civilians who SL claims they are rescuing. Who is saving who? If you are open minded reasonable person please be sensible an thing before making comment. Hesitate for a moment and think of all the innocents Tamils has been killed and dying at this moment. Why SL is not allowing any international bodies. What are they hiding?

One more thing, Vijay Nambiar brother Sathees Nambiar is Rajepakses Consultant?

  105. Sellam says:

Let the Tamils in Sri Lanka decide their future. The Sinhalese and the Tamils have to live together for long. Let others mind their own business, particularly the Tamil Diaspora.

  106. Pottu Ceylon says:

Good bye to our Sri Lankan hitler

  107. Thamby says:

To All Sinhalese, Celebrating and Whooping it Up:

The Tamil terror has been brought under control, for now.

Who is going to bring down the Sinhalese State Terrorist?

This nasty war will continue till the Tamils are given equal rights and a real federal state, where they can run their own affairs.

For the last 60 years the Sinhalese leaders and the Buddhist clergy in Sri Lanka has shown no interest in treating Tamils as equals. Why would that change now?

Sorry to say that we are just entering another phase in the war rather than ending the war. Don’t fool your self.

Today the Tamils and Sinhalese are farther apart than they have ever been in our short history. There is no excuse for Tamils to live as second class citizens anywhere in this world. Same is true for the Sinhalese.

    Foreign Correspondent
    (By: Gomin Dayasri)
It’s a stopover in paradise for a Foreign Correspondent to live majestically on his overseas allowance. Such comfortable digs are not in the market in the recession stung home country. There is exotic food and groovy watering holes at affordable prices. NGOs’ provide the freebies and rolls the red carpet.

Evenings may be dull but there is fun around-sun and surf, safaris and misty mountains within easy reach. Surroundings are ideal to prop a savings account for a rainy day. It’s an earn to save assignment; where on most days the drink and dinner is free with invitations galore. Many sophisticated hostesses desire to declare that they call the local BBC /CNN man by the first name. They pass unquoted quotes, to display their importance.

It’s a comfortable station to report a war with no hazard to life or limb-the possible menace being the cancellation of the visa and a deportation order. Foreign correspondents live in Iraq or Afghanistan, Sudan or Somalia with death beckoning.

English is understood by those who matter and the girls in the NGO circuit provide the information and entertainment. News is at the door step with LTTE agents in attendance. Cultivation of news sources is not a requirement as there is a free flow.

So laid back is life with much free time to read the book that requires the time to read. The constant irritant being the need to attend press conferences where Ministers narrate stories which the editor will not bother to read. Yet a convenient platform to meet the tribe to exchange a few yarns to embarrass the government.

To win the holiday package you need the war to obtain the assignment. If the guns are silenced the return ticket will arrive to pack the bags. War is a must and it must go on and on and on for the good life to continue. Otherwise Sri Lanka is not a resident base for a Foreign Correspondent. The event will be conveniently covered by the Delhi bureau with a periodic visit to Colombo.

To keep the war on track LTTE presence as a fighting formation is paramount. To beef the LTTE, arms and ammunition and ships and planes are alone not sufficient-pen and ink are equally vital. To win the hearts and minds it is necessary to usher the propaganda war-so enters the Foreign Correspondent.

Most Foreign Correspondents arrive with a neo liberal agenda peddled by their editorial staff. Sri Lanka is often an early posting and a stepping stone to the cosmopolitan world of journalism-many in Colombo are seen later in hotspots around the world dispatching reports. For upward mobility writing must calibrate with thinking of the news desk and editorial opinion which is to romanticize the war with a strong tilt to the underdog. That is breaking news and a visa to a more prestigious posting.

Their insights on arrival had been choreographed by the NGOs and provided with a hand picked list of contacts from the NGO seminar circuit. They take over with a dinner date in a local atmospheric caf‚ with sophisticated small talk in attractive company. A traveling urbane companion is provided to map the Colombo strategy. To the credit of the foreign correspondent many are not soft bunnies and in their whimsical western way enjoy the goodies laced with their typical suave cynicism. Still, there is much common ground to tread hand in hand with the Colombians.

LTTE churns out television footage from their sources; so does the government. Watch on BBC, CNN, Al Jazzera – always on display is the LTTE coverage hardly ever from government sources. If so slanted to sympathize, with the LTTE. Is this balance presentation or a tilt towards the favorite son? Certainly reporting from Colombo, the television Foreign Correspondent is more balanced in his presentation than the anchor person in the studio. This is media manipulation at its prime, supporting the philosophy of western stalwarts like Hillary Clinton, leaning towards the terrorist outfit. The local based foreign minions have to toe the official line, from editor to statesman, for their future enhancement.

The print media are the foot soldiers of the LTTE; the dispatches that please the editor are those that discredit Sri Lanka. Having supported the LTTE relentlessly for over 25 years, to be defeated in a cause they peddled, is to have egg on the face. Westerners can never take defeat gracefully when inflicted by Easterners. It was visible from Dien Bien Phu to Saigon, from Baghdad to Kabul. It is unbearable to watch terrorism being defeated with minimum facilities, while the west gropes with jealous green eyes, the east achieving success as they understand better the aspiration of the peoples’ local power.

It is a wonder why the west has been unable to fathom the reason the CIA is a permanent loser in the final chapter?

These media mercenaries treat with contempt those in conflict with their culture- it a handful that have the sophistication to understand cross cultures. What ever is alien to their value structure, is blasphemous. They carry chips on both shoulders; mocking both the NGOs that nourish them to the government they abhor. At least at this point there is no discrimination. It is a complex in reverse, stupid!

With the LTTE gone where will they go? After few more horror stories to demean the Security Forces and back to the bonnie of the west to face the shock treatment of recession. War is an investment relief to the Foreign Correspondent. The order will soon come to pack the flack jackets and return to a not so sweet home and to wait patiently for a call to another exotic destination?

To be fair, the Foreign Correspondent deserves sympathy-he is his master’s voice. The master placed his bet on the wrong horse and made the work horse sounds dim and daft.

The Foreign Correspondent will now jet to another destination to write a story to please his master, provided he is pleased. Left to himself he would be more objective, but he has to find a destination-so he remains obliged!

  109. R Maran says:

KP says in interview some worthy points for all of us.

?Several Tamil parties in Sri Lanka once had taken up arms and fought for the same cause in pursuit of the Tamil national question. Fundamentally, we hope that they still honour these principles. At this juncture, we earnestly hope that they would come forward to work together to achieve this.?

?We recognize the role of India as crucial in this respect. The Tamil people of Sri Lanka and the Tamils living in India share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. This binds us strongly not only with the Tamils in India but also with Tamils world over: in countries like South Africa, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Fiji and the Reunion not counting our own who have adopted the many nations of the world as theirs.?

?We have always considered interests of India and Tamil people lie on the same line and historically the Tamil people in the Island are true friends of the Indian nation. At this crucial time, we now urge India to take a just stand to ensure the safety, dignity and self-respect of Tamils in Sri Lanka. We need to act prudently at this point of time. We are fully aware that India has a key role to play geo-politically in our part of the world and we need to work very closely with them. The LTTE at this juncture is ready to work together with India to ensure the future of Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka.?

  110. Smart says:

    I agree with Naan Kadavul…

Everyone thought with the elimination of Saddam Hussein the war is over. Actually it got intensified only after that…

Everybody thought with the elimination of Hitler the war is over… The cold war and nuclear build up started only after that…

If the Srilanka is smart, they better announce Tamil Eelam now..

  111. Sid says:

Hell just got a bit more crowded. Has anyone forewarned the Devil to expect so many simultaneous guests at once?

I imagine he has already prepared the suite for the new guests- complete with JR, Premadasa, and SWRD to keep them company. I’m sure they will all have plenty to talk about.

  112. rawana says:

If you go through the comments, some Tamils ( I assume they are tamils) are writing in a hated mentality. Most comments by otherside seem (both Sinhala and some Tamils) looking forward to live in harmony.

If Tamil voice is going to come out through these hatred-mentality Tamils may never be able to live peacefully.

  113. Amarnath says:

Time to wake up to realities

This quick note is written as a response to some young “Marxists” in TN who still believe Prabhakaran can not be defeated because he is such a “Super hero”, a “genius” of a man.

The idea that Prabhakaran can not be touched, that he is a Super hero, has been blown into bits and pieces.

He ends up as one of the most brainless guerilla leaders in recent history.

Imagine a guerilla leader who drags a whole society into almost annihilation and then dies trying to run away after the whole war had been cleanly won by the govt security forces ?

    Take his decisions.

    · Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi – what advantage does the LTTE has in giving up the only available escape route ? There was no politics in that decision. It was only based on the psyche of a guerilla soldier, who knows only to kill his adversaries

    · Assassination of Tamil leaders – Amirthalingam, Thiruchelvam, etc. A tactical politico military leader would always want such democratic leaders to put up the front for their campaign. They always go for political alliances with such accepted and respected political leaders. Here is a plain guerilla soldier who can not understand politics. The result is, he kills both his foes and friends.

    · The decision to support Rajapaksa to presidency – There was no logic in it. What was Prabhakaran going to gain by forcing 6 lakhs of Tamil people in the North to boycott the presidential elections in 2005 November ? Did he expect to have a better negotiating space with a Sinhala leader who vowed to establish a Sinhala Unitary State ? Or did expect he could win the war completely ? Didn’t he know the tide was against him in a war, after 9/11 ? His was an outfit that was banned in almost 35 countries. He proved he does not understand politics. He only understood guerilla war.

    · Decision to enter into conflict with Rajapaksa regime – With Mavil aru episode, did not he realize he can not sustain a conventional war ? Wasn’t it awfully stupid for him to roll back his entire mini State from the Mannar West coast to Mullaitivu East coast, without any resistance ? If he could not offer resistance, why did he drag these innocent civilians in lakhs to death and despair ?

He proved he does not know politics, when he ignorantly over stepped as always and dropped all chances of establishing a powerful “province” in the North – East through the Oslo Agreement in December 2002.

After negating that chance and bringing Rajapaksa as President, he could not even defend his Tamil homeland concept, when the East was de merged from the North.

Let’s face the realities. Pinning all hopes on Prabhakaran was the life of the Diaspora and to a certain degree of those ex ML groups in TN. In the Sri Lankan Tamil society which was grounded on SL soil, there was no such “high hopes” but they were led by the LTTE, with brute force. The LTTE was living with and depending on the Diaspora for all money, procurement, publicity and campaigning, international networking and probably for intellectual inputs. Therefore, the LTTE was not answerable to the Tamil people living in SL, but to the Diaspora.

Now this super hero ends himself, decimating a whole Tamil society and having aided and abetted in installing a terror Sinhala State, under which the Sinhala democratic forces are also crushed ruthlessly.

The irony is, all those who opposed the Rajapaksa presidency because they wanted a democratic solution based on power sharing are now labeled as “traitors” and hounded by a Sinhala regime that was installed with the support of Prabhakaran.

    Statement 2:

We wish to bring to the notice of the International Community the events of the last 24 hours in the so called safety zone in the war in Sri Lanka.

Subsequent to our announcement that the LTTE had decided to “silence the guns” in view of the unbearable civilian carnage at the hands of the Sri Lankan military and the heavy weaponry donated to it by third parties, we were informed by some member states of the International Community that arrangements had been made with the Sri Lankan military for discussions on an orderly end to the war.

We were instructed to make contact with the 58th Division of the Sri Lankan forces in the war zone, un-armed and carrying white flags. Head of our Political Wing, Mr. B. Nadesan and Mr. Puleedevan then proceeded to do so. They were un-armed and carrying white flags and were called on by the Officers of the 58th Division to come forward for discussions. When they complied they were both shot and killed. We vehemently condemn this action. The International Community needs to take this into account in its deliberations about charges of “Crimes against Humanity” against the members of the Sri Lanka Government and its military establishment. This act is even more unpalatable when one takes into account that the LTTE released as an act of goodwill, seven Sri Lankan Prisoners of War the day before totally unharmed.

We appeal to the International Community to act now to ensure the safety and basic needs of the displaced people who are suffering in the prison camps of the Sri Lankan military. The onus is now on the International Community to see that further war crimes and crimes against humanity are not committed on Tamils by the Sri Lankan state and to force the Sri Lankan state to yield in to the political aspirations of the Tamil people.

What are the disciples of your hero doing in the eastern province? robbing. raping and kidnapping and killing innocent children for money.

The erstwhile eastern leader’s name will be enshrined in Tamils history for ever after ettappan.

  127. Kumar says:

    #121 Amal

It is strange that with a distorted first name like that you are taking a swipe at the entire Eastern Province. The EP has contributed more cadres to LTTE and other groups and have lost more civilians in the last 26 years than the North. Don’t be an ostrich, ask your own LTTE bosses.

I don’t know why Karuna left LTTE, but knowing the lies perpetuated by the LTTE against anyone who showed any dissent or been fair minded in their critique (whether it was LTTE Mahathaya, TELO Sabaratnam, Rajini Thiranagama or Neelan Tiruchelvam), it may be that Karuna was telling the truth as to why he left. As for what Karuna’s/Pillaiyan’s cadres are doing – they were trained by LTTE to torture and kill – they are like killer dogs and will do what the master says whether the master is the sun god or a rogue leader.

Now I’ll get to your swipe at EP Tamils. The Tamils from EP have traditionally enjoyed a laid back life as EP has been the rice bowl of Sri Lanka and flowing with milk and honey. There was nothing that the British could offer the Tamils of EP to entice them in their ‘divide and rule’ policy. So the British showered the Northern Tamils, who had been toiling hard in grovel land and salty waters with all the privileges with schools, scholarships, lands in Colombo and government jobs. Alas, over two centuries the Northerners reaped the benefits of British largesse until the day of independence.

Then the Sinhalese (except a few in Colombo) who were hitherto deprived of the rightful benefits in the country where they are a majority set out to correct the situation with a vengeance. The way they went about was as abhorent as what the British did in oppressing them while showering Tamils with favours. They thought they were correcting two centuries of discrimination and that the Tamils could lose some privileges while the Sinhalese regained some rights.

In repeating the cycle, the Tamils started the armed struggle against what they saw as discrimination and violence against them, with a vengeance and hatred that has now resulted in nearly 100,000 deaths and the economic, social, demographic and geographical destruction of Tamils.

Everyone in Sri Lanka have lost. Those who know and appreciate the loss and have a sense of fairness and justice would want to find ways to rebuild the lives of those in North and East.

But racist fools like you who may not have invited or been invited to a house in Jaffna because of your caste until the day you left Sri Lanka; who will never agree to your son/daughter to get married to a son/daughter of a lower caste fellow Tamil; may never have known a Sinhalese or Muslim in a personal way; who is driven by the hatred against not just the Sinhalese but everyone including Tamils who disagree with your views; and trust only your own ego and the megalomaniacal sun god, should be condemned by all.

For Serbian Leaders, it was UN who supervised the massacre and no one was punished. But it was NATO who took the law into its hand and stopped then in Kosova.

Russia and Chinese leders are not HUMANs. They are beasts.

I guess you are one of the mouth pieces of GoSL in Geneva and you have a lot of work to do.

  130. RS Wickramasinghe says:

DBS why so silent? We need your words to filter the official lies being propagated.

  131. SR says:

April #131, Excuse me but I am not a mouthpiece of anybody, but myself. I am just a simple everyday man and don’t live in either Geneva or Colombo!!!
FYI, yes I do have lot of work to do because I am employed and working full time.
If you do not wish peace so be it, your choice! If you want to fight another 30 years let it be, I sincerely hope a majority of tamils don’t think that way.
Be realistic, do you think NATO will be concerned with SL? I don’t think so!!! But anyway let us see. Anyhow, do you think MR et al, even if it comes to a situation, will not have a way out of it???
Please do not pass on comments about leaders of other countries, show some respect. The problem with people like you is that everybody who don’t walk your line are bad, this is not so, that is why I say GET REAL!!!
Everyting is based on perception, what you see as right may or may not be right for me, because my perception may be different from yours! But that does not essentially make me better or worse than you! This is a fact of life!
I Think LTTE & Prabhakaran had their chances and they floundered big time, only they are to blame! Because they overestimated themselves and underestimated the opponents! That does not mean that tamils do not have problems, they have issues that need to be sorted, I hope GOSL looks in to those with the same earnestness they had about finishing the war.
Yes I do agree war leaves scars that are difficult to heal, that was why I had previously commented that war should have stopped and GOSL had crossed the line. But the fact is that whatever happened has happened, we are here, now, not yesterday! I am a realist, we have to look to the future, not dote in the past!! Cheers!

  132. Johan says:

Prabhakaran’s dead body was just shown on TV in SL. It’s him for sure. Looks like he’s been shot in the forehead. They had a handkerchief over the top of his head but his face, eyes were easily recognizable. His tiger uniform was quite clean (no blood, mud etc); didn’t look like he had been involved in a fight. Could it be that he was captured alive? Just a thought. Anyway, clearly he didn’t commit suicide or blow himself up.

  133. Liyanage says:

  134. sven says:

the question still remains is vp dead?will there be more vp’s in the future?who created the first vp? was it tamils while living happily with the sinhalese created vp for fun?
what’s in it for china & iran?how will the west react when china increases it’s influence in sl?will they create a tamil osama and make afganistan out of sl.
those who are talking affectionately about their tamil brothers & sisters – why there is no one mourning for the losses of their thousands of brothers & sisters.
you never called us brothers & sisters before. why call us now when we are defeated?

  135. Amyn Chatoor says:

LTTE blood is not Tamil Blood. The LTTE deserved what they got. They were nothing but liars, cheats & murders. Needless to say they abducted children too. For all the those tamils living overseas your very correct in feeling bad as you had to leave during the 1983 riots. However the situation has changed now so look forwards from today.

  136. shankar says:

pirabaharans body is shown in army website http://www.army.lk

  137. shanthi krish says:

I just saw thalaivar’s body on local TV. it’s obvious he was not killed while trying to escape. looks like he was kept, tortured & executed by a shot in the head. the utube video will be out soon. take a look at the fingers. they look crushed.

the day mahinda rushed back was the day thalaivar was captured. so he must have suffered in army custody for a day or two. my guess is that he was tricked into a bogus surrender. the proof for this theory lies in the fact that MR boldly declared tuesday’s speech in parliament.

if thalaivar was not in custody he would have never done that. he could not have made the speech with thalaivar loose. so the army obviously got the set of LTTE leaders earlier & announced their deaths in batches. thalaivar’s death was announced last in a very dramatic fashion.

the whole thing was timed & set up.

  138. MARUTHY says:

U may have good chance to get solve this problem and help to innocent Tamils to get their rights. Hope u love our people than write.

  141. Antoney says:

    Mr. dbs,

There are dramatic rumors and propaganda by the Gov. that Mr. Prabakaran is Dead. How far is it true ? One thing is confirmed that the SL-government is staging a barbaric dram to satisfy the Intl. Law. How do you thing of this latest conspiracy of the Gov.

    Antoney

  142. Lali says:

A lot of commentries are saying the government should be punished for war crimes. Which war crimes? Killing the LTTE leader and the carders who shoot at army? When surrender options were oferede 3 times, they were not serious. Why “surrender” is serious only when KP decides?. This is a unnecessary war started by LTTE. So they are responsible for all the kilings including the civillings died during the war and outside the war. Anyone who sit outside and support LTTE even by words are also responsible. Commentators tend to forget the killings of innocent tamils, sinhaleses and muslims in the name of a freedom struggle???

  143. Lali says:

    dear shanthi krish (139)

you are talking about touchering and getting info.
This is a serious scenario where the Army has done so much sacrifications to end the Bloody war against a ruthless gyu who has turned down every peace oportunity and become more and more powerful militarily. So the course justifies the means.
Anyway they were supposed to take the capsule as they convinced the children of poor families to do so. Why they didnt do it? Why run away? why surrender? After sacrifying so many lives for this useless war.

  144. purple says:

I think VP and his team were captured/killed much earlier by the SLA. However they must have been under pressure not to announce this till the elections in Tamil Nadu were over.
There has to been a logical explanation to the final chapter in this story.
What the SLA claims seems to contradict itself.

  145. rita says:

more than 80000 innnocents, childrens, unborn babies, sick adults, journalists,
dead. schools, houses, hospitals , media, all bombed by the government forces/armies in the name of eliminating terrorists. young children abducted and raped and murdered, no one has been brought to justice, this only tells me, this is continue to happens by the ruthless army force, what happend in haiti, where the srilankan army force was caught by the media trying to solicit underaged gals and were thrown out. as no one speak out the truth in srilanka,
i am affraid, worst crimes are going to happen in srilanka for the poor people.
getting abuducted and disappered. soo many innocents childrens, babies, pregnant mothers, adults left continue to die, as result of no food/water, shelter.
horrified truth are not being told, as fear of death by these army force.

  148. yours truly says:

India wanted to positively identify the Prabakaran’s body.
Today DNA testing proved it is the LTTE chief’s body.
Karuna and Daya master also had positvely identified.

Even a veteran author like DBS Jeyaraj did not believe an end like this to Prabakaran getting killed by the army bullet. He predicted him biting the cynide as the worst.

    That is all over.
This is what is important to me.

“President pointed out that the end of the war against the ‘terrorist’ was not a defeat for the Tamil community and henceforth, he did not want to identify them as a minority community in the country.

According to President Rajapaksa, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, and Malays are no longer minorities, all are Sri Lankans.

There are now only two national identities, patriots and non-patriots, the latter is now the minority, President stressed. ”

We all beileve in the above.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

Which one of the many official and unofficial versions about VP’s “death” do you want me to believe?

Who is a “patriot” and who is “not” a patriot?

    Who defines what “patriotism” is?

we are treading on very dangerous ground here.

If SWRD Bandaranaike opened one pandora’s box in 1956 Mahinda Rajapakse a “child of 56″ is opening anothe pandora’s box by this definition of the Sri Lanka identity.

    cry the beloved country!

  149. Anil says:

DBS: I am impatiently waiting for your next column (after 19th). Thanks

  150. Dr. Arun Vincent says:

    Dear DBS,
    are you there?
We pray that you are NOT caught up in the cross fire? Hope you will be out of Muliyavaikkal soon

  151. Sri Lankan says:

First of all i must say that I wish death on nobody and I dont think Prabakaran is an exception given the attrocities he has commited in the name of a freedom fight.
Sri Lanka is economically , politically and socially handicapped because of the effects of three decades of war and a lot of things have changed since the problem first began after the independence in Sri Lanka.
I dnt understand how the Muslims and the christians can co exist with the singhalese while the tamils can not. I also do not see a reason why the Education Department shouldnt make both singhalese and tamil compulsary subjects in schools and arrange opportunities for the children of the north and east to meet the children in the south of the country. This would change the attitude of the people and make them feel more open minded and there would be more tolerance of the others.
I personally can speak perfectly in Singhaleese Tamil and English so i dont have a problem to communicate as a result i have freinds who are tamil singhalese and muslims and also christians. So I dont understand why others cant be tolerent as well. Its more or less an attitude problem.
All politicians are elected to Parliament with the hope that they will serve the country and its people with dedication and honesty and I do hope for the best of my country that they will now work out a political solution that will prevent future rebellions from happening.
I would like to extend my sympathies to everyone who has suffered and lost loved ones in this bloody war that plagued Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

  152. Dr. Arun Vincent says:

One could see the dead body of the allged VP at http://www.army.lk

It looks like a head shot. The entry wound is just above left eye brow and it had gone in an angle making the exit through the top of the head. That is why they have covered becos head skull had shattered due to exit wound.

One problem! VP does NOT have his middle finger in his left arm. He lost it long time ago. But in the pictures it is NOT missing.

  153. Nagesh says:

DBS, Put us out of this misery – tell the truth !

IF all these conspiracy theories are true, why aren’t the (remnants of) Tigers admitting it? Is KP (SP?) colluding with GoSL?

Also thalaivar looks clean shaven in the pics, every bit the gent we know him to be. What an untimely demise!

  154. Ruwan, Canada says:

Tiger supporters called genocide. This final show called genocide of terrorist. Killing terrorists a war crime?? What a jork. Sinhalese always wanted to live with other races, muslims live happily and they don’t think they are lower, but tamils always think they are lower that sinhalese, stop thinking that way. That is the only solution for this problem. many people came to defeat sinhalese in last thousand years, because of the protection of buddhism no one can defeat them. Sientificaly it is unable to prove but that is a universal truth.

  155. dingiri says:

Well, If he is alive and well as KP says he needs to show up in a video much like bin Laden to reassure his fans and supporters that he is still alive.

Even if he surrendered before being dispatched by the Army I wont be shedding any tears. Anyone who could cold-bloodedly kill people who have done them no harm deserve no sympathy. Also, its not like he showed any mercy to the 600 policemen who surrendered to him in the EP when he broke away from the previous round of peace talks without warning.

What do you make of the man who actually ordered execution of surrendered policemen now standing with top army men in his capacity as cabinet minister and viewing the “body” of his former leader?…………………DBSJ

“Why LTTE did not target innocents in South like SL Gov did for Tamils?”

What ? u must be joking u say u’ve studied this for 35 years and dnt know anything about LTTE targeting civilians in the south????? Hey i ‘ve some news for u THATS WHAT THEY DD ALL OF THIER LIVES. Trust me when i say this because one of the 1000′s of bombs went off near our univesity and killed a bunch of my collegues and in the fort railway station another human bomb went off killing half dozen kids from my old school which was also our school baseball tream. So please check your facts before u talk and dont think everything in the internet is true.
Yes innocent ppl have died in the war front and that is a shame but that is war especiailly when the LTTE is using them to shield them selves but can u give an example of a war conducted without civilian deaths?
For the seperate country thing it will not work out if the division is through hatred. EX
    pak india
    israel palestine

  157. R.Veera says:

I belive he is a history, I urge my beloved tamil people dont loose your hope your dream and my dream will come true. Sinhala leadership never going grant our independence or freeedom. As long as they beleive sinhala srilanka, we have no choice but total separation. Mr.DBS know very well sinhalayo never ever treat tamils equally, they may be friendly but if you talk to them regading any solution they are absolutly different. I again tell you all they still in stone age.

  158. Amirtham says:

At defence.lk, not only we see the naked body of Thecia Thalaivar he is being identified by his own Ex body guard Karuna Amman and Daya Master.
    What other confirmation we need?

As I always thought this coward did not commit suicide like many other Tamils who committed suicide on his indoctrination. He would have tried to run away and the army more correctly, and accurately this time, shot him in his head.

What a shame on this man. He was boasting big that his enemy would not even find his body. What we see here is not his unhealthy body but the enemy is squeezing his balls! He boasted that there are 100 people around him always carrying kerosene to burn his body when he commits suicide. Where are these 100 men now.

It is shame on Tamils who not only followed him and still talking about him. Let us stop talking about this bastard hereafter.

  159. Tamil Victim says:

Sinhala race has forgot about that LTTE showed mercy when 40,000 beleagured troops were trapped in Jaffna pennisula 2002. LTTE declared a ceasefire to save their lives. This cowardice sinhala barbaric military did not show the same mercy to the LTTE soldiers when they were trapped in Mullai theevu. This is the basic difference between Tamils and Sinhala race.

  160. shankar says:

    comment 139 -shanthi

i dont know which world you are living in. you think pirapaharan is a numbskull to surrender to the army. they would have probably roasted him alive. we will wait till indians do a DNA test and confirm. it is in their interest to do it because of rajiv and also legally it is necessary.when indians confirm we can close the last chapter of this sorry saga. until then keep your new book pending.

  161. Pithukkuli says:

The Tamil Diaspora have become victim of their own lies and are not mourning the man lying dead in the jungles of Wanni – Prabaharan. Tamil Diaspora leaders have practiced their usual trick as always, except this time they have become the victims of their own lies. Shame on you leaders and general members of Tamil Diaspora. I have to say this is the lowest point of your misguided struggle. Hope it does not get worse from here!

  162. Konnapu Bandar says:

Patriots are those who love our country and do everything in their power to help the country and keep it united. Non-patriots or more bluntly put traitors are those who hate our country and work day and night to betray, destroy, break up and smear the good name of the country.

    Cheers!

  163. Resh says:

DBS will comment on the defense.lk pics. Do you believe it’s Praba? We are all waiting for your word on this and a fresh article with all the new developments. I think I speak for all in this blog!!

  164. Ranjan says:

So here starts another conspiracy. Is he dead or not. If he is dead, GOSL will have to do a DNS analysis and verify it with independent observers and show the world. If he is not as KP says, they need to provide proof. I can see endless stories of how people have seen Praba alive from now on. Eventually we will see a story how some one saw him pumping gas at a Scarborough gas bar on the night shift – just like Elvis.

Whichever way it goes, I don’t think it matters now. LTTE is destroyed completely for now. I think the government has a window of opportunity of about a year or two to come up with a political solution that is acceptable to Tamil people. If they act with wisdom, this will mean the end of Tamil struggle. If they do not, and if the Singhalese starts to act as an arrogant victor, we will be discussing similar things in about 10 years time.

The most urgent shot term goal for GOSL has to be the resettlement of the 250 000 people who are now in the IDP camps. To keep them sitting in these camps indefinitely, having nothing for them to do, is a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen. However, for that to happen, most of the Vanni will have to be de-mined quickly and rebuilt. The farmers need to return to their farms, the fishermen needs to go back to their fishing villages and start fishing and kid need to go back to schools.

As Mahinda said today in the parliament, the solution has to come from Sri Lanka and has to be acceptable to the Tamils of Sri Lanka. As far as GOSL is concerned, the Diaspora is a lost cause. They will never settle for anything less that absolute and complete separation. The Diaspora is full of heroes that are ready to fight to death for a separate country for Tamils, as long as the dead are somebody else. These are the heroes who would burn down a temple that I personally know has helped many Tamils in Toronto on various matters. Will the GOSL come up with something? I don’t know, time will tell. On thing is certain. Mahinda is so popular and powerful among the Singhalese at present, if he sets his mind on it, he will have no opposition from any of the Singhalese players. I think the way he has acted, he has cut the legs off from JVP and JHU, who were fringe parties to begin with. Only other factor that GOSL will have to make sure is that whatever political arrangement that is finally arrived at, it should satisfy India also. GOSL can not ignore India as the only way the LTTE Version 2.0 can arise is if they are given room to grow in India. Prabhakaran’s decision to murder Rajiv Gandhi will go down in the history as one of the colossal blunders that a political entity has made ever in human history because that was the end of LTTE for all intents and purposes.

I hope that we have all learned something from this madness. The two communities have to live and share this small island. Whether they like it or not, they will have to live side by side of each other. I hope they understand the reality and will live with each other rather than kill each other.

And for you DBS, I have seen many posters urge you to join a future dialogue between Singhalese and Tamils. I think you have a much more important job, that is continue the unbiased reporting that has been hallmark of what you do. So here’s to hoping that you will remain doing what you do best and leave the thankless job of nation building to others.

  165. Nallavan says:

    DBS anna,
Your silance is deafning. Are you going through a period of disbelief and profound sadness with the turn of events…

I have been deploring the LTT’s means and methods and their leadership for years. I have not participated in the ‘Flag’ rallies.. but believed in Tamil nationalism and my belief has only strengthened in the last few days ( when SL president declares there is ‘no minorities’ and ‘defines patriotism’!!)

But, now I feel I should take to the streets and protest and press the west as hard as ever for,
    1) A unilateral genocide / war crime inquiry by US and Britian (getting the UN is imposible with China and Russia)
    2) Push a UN and India backed autonomy for Tamils

Tamil Nationalism no longer has the ‘Terrorist Tag’ and I think that is a good thing.

  166. Ranjan says:

To Tamil Victim (#161): You say LTTE showed mercy to 40000 GOSL troops trapped in Jaffna pennisula 2002. That is distorting history. LTTE was stopped dead in tracks by the new MBRLs that the GOSL got from Pakistan at that time. You think that if he had a chance, Prabha would have stopped taking Jaffna just because he wanted to show mercy to SL troops? Who are you trying to kid?

On the otherhand, can you also talk about the mercy that was shown to the 800 police officers that surrendered to the LTTE on GOSL orders when IPKF arrived in the island in 1986? Do you know what happened to them? Or you would rather not remember??

In the last minuet he is carrying corrodes of rupees in bags this money is belongs to the civilians how many guys killed by chewing cyanide did he had cyanide capsule around the neck no his main aimed is to escape some how.
I will tell you people something interested Valupolli Prabukaran is terrorist manufacturing arms and supplying to the other terrorist groups & supplying of drugs dealing and supplying around world wide this is the way he create his fortune he never ever love any Tamils he love only his businesses and his Owen terrorism to protect him self don’t ever be foolish think wise and behave like a grown up human been.

yes the solution has come from srilanka but the problem is some tamils are living among sinhalese while the others have suffered a lot & under seige.they will settle for very little

if vp is dead then a vital player is nomore.a bottleneck has been eliminated.now is the time for the govt. to find a honest & everlasting solution if the they are willing.but looking at the celebrations back in sl & reading some of the comments here make me pecimistic.

  175. shanthi krish says:

    TO DBS -

the SLA has embarked on another recruitment drive with ads on TV. I would like ur opinion & comments on hat.
    —————————————————————————-

also I cannot help but admire the clinical & ruthless efiiciency the LTTE was defeated by GOSL. it was like clockwork. even the timing seemed pre planned & perfect. for example thalaivar’s death was announced a few days after the indian elections.

But the biggest achievent by far was MR/ GOSL showing the middle finger to the western powers who obviously had plans to drag this confllct on endlessly. in sharp contrast to ranil, MR has recognized who the genuine friends & enemies of sri lanka are. the west has been exposed as false friends & true enemies. today they stand naked, exposed & stranded on the world highway. these are the first signs of the end of western hegemony in the world.

it’s about time tamil diaspora realises that the LTTE, white tamil constituent politicians & white lawyers are bleeding them white & taking them on a massive ride while very well knowing the impossibility of breaking up sri lanka.

when declaring eelam war 3 thalaivar obviously banked on the diaspora to pressurise their respecive western powers to make GOSL stop the war if things got sticky for the LTTE. it was a bad mistake. LTTE diaspora overestimated their own potential & exposed their true strength in the west. because of that now they will be much weaker in the west than before. it is apparent now that street violence & attacks such as acid on sinhala expats will increase. this will further diminish their cause & standing in the west.

KP has completely lost face as the new LTTE leader who achieved nothing. he was completely ignored by the GOSL while the LTTE leadership was massacared at will by SLA. all the evidence points to a well orchestrated & pre-planned massacare before the announcements of the LTTE leadership. KP just had to by helplessly not knowing what was going on.

also by completely ignoring the very forked tongue & hostile western powers & getting away with it scot free MR has fatally wounded the west & it’s authority in the world. it might set a precedent to other third world countries to ignore the west & call its bluff.

  176. dingiri says:

—What do you make of the man who actually ordered execution of surrendered policemen now standing with top army men in his capacity as cabinet minister and viewing the “body” of his former leader?…………………DBSJ

You do have a point there. True, he is culpable. However, if there is a proper election in the East where the Eastern Tamils vote him in as their leader, and he refrains from killing in the future we should be pragmatic and accomodate him. He derserves credit for having the courage to renounce violence. I’m sure the man had time to reflect on his past deeds while in prison in the UK. Infact as a human being I think he has more potential than some of our cynical leaders on the Sinhala side. I am impressed by how he has taught himself English and even manages to make a profound statement from time to time. Too bad he is being used by the Rajapaksas. Hopefully he can become his own man in time to come.

If it was possible to make a Karuna out of Prabakaran it would have been preferable to killing him but I dont think anyone was prepared to take that gamble. If he was taken alive the SLG would only be inviting being held to ransom over his release at some time in the future. Even retiring him overseas would have been quite fraught.

  177. Karuna says:

The only option for the Tamil people is to live peacefully with Sri Lankans.

All diaspora efforts should be put towards rebuilding the country and providing aid for those in the government welfare camps.

The defeat of the LTTE provides the Tamils with a great opportunity to finally reconcile with the Sinhalese. The Tamils need to prove to the Sinhalese that they love Sri Lanka and that they are ready to rebuild the country.

The LTTE’s single-minded belief that a sovereign Tamil Eelam was the only solution was always part of the problem.

Tamil grievances no longer exist in Sri Lanka. The Sinhalese have rectified all these grievances and Tamils live as equals in Colombo.
Tamils need to be humble and work towards rebuilding Sri Lanka.

The people are tired of war. The LTTE was the curse of the Tamils.

John (#183), He is not my beloved by any means. However, I do not mind tolerating him because he has renounced violence. Some times we have to hold our noses and accept the practical reality. In a similar fashion, JVP was responsible for some horrendous crimes in 87-89, but now they are in politics and in the parliament. I would not have any objections if at some point in the past LTTE gave up violence and entered politics. However, despite given many chances they were incapable of doing that.

  183. sydney Zoyza says:

    DBS said earlier

Who is a “patriot” and who is “not” a patriot?

    Who defines what “patriotism” is?

    DBS,

    Perhaps the following will help:

This is a pleadge that every school child takes in the United States every day:

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

  184. PersecutedByGoSL says:

So what happned DBSJ? Any new updates on the last assult now that the guns are silent?.

  185. Pramod says:

    Today is 21st May 2009.

Eighteen years ago , Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime minister of India was exploded to pieces .

I am extremely happy on this day, the death anniversary of Late Rajiv Gandhi, that

Mr. Velupilai Prabhakaran remains as Late Velupaillai Prabhakaran .

I was never an admirer of Rajiv Gandhi.

Did not find him wise in many of his actions and decisions.

But this moment was since been longing.

    Thanks to God.

  186. shanthi krish says:

since karuna & daya master claims to identify the body we should rest it. does not mean what u see is what u get.

bottom line is that thalaivar is in a place which is advantagous to SLA. either in this world or another. same for puttu amman.

  187. Stephen Jones says:

What do you make of the man who actually ordered execution of surrendered policemen now standing with top army men in his capacity as cabinet minister and viewing the “body” of his former leader?

Karuna appears to be clear of that one. According the UTHR(J)
All circumstances surrounding this tragedy, point to it being a consequence of a decision taken by the LTTE leadership at local level, about which the area leaders came to know only after, the policemen had surrendered —i.e. probably after 6.00 p.m.

    UTHR

However, I do not mind tolerating him because he has renounced violence.

Only because he doesn’t have any goondas any more to do the violence for him.

Dont be too sure , do you know who killed Pillaiyan’s secretary in Colombo? ………….DBSJ

  188. Ranjan, the MBRLs came from the Ukraine. The 800 policemen were killed in June 1990, not 1986.

  189. Srilanka says:

Yep, Lets help LTTE to find their freedom land in Europe, USA, or Canada…

Please people let Srilankan citizens to decide what is good for them.
Don’t put your nose and get burn. You don’t live in Srilanka. So don’t cry for us for your benefits.

And for you Mr. Jeyaraj get a life…

  190. dingiri says:

    The American definition is interesting.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

I would define my own patriotism as thus…

    1. Concern for the physical and mental well being of the people in my country.

    2. Desire for equal opportunities, rights and entitlements for everyone.

    3. Desire for the right of anyone to live, work and travel anywhere in the country.

    4. Desire for the preservance of the environmental integrity of the country. i.e. its forrests, rivers, coastline and wildlife.

Any solution that guarantees all of the above for everyone is fine with me.

I am very uncomfortable and squeamish about the flag waving patriotism displayed around the US and also in Sri Lanka as as of recent times. The reason I guess is because it is the cheapest form of patriotism. You wave the flag, scream and shout and feel you’ve done a great deal for your country. I know too many people who fly flags and sport patriotic stickers on their car windscreens but dodge tax, take backhanders for doing their job and waste government money as if it belongs to nobody. Also, I dislike it when someone patently corrupt, and has raided the contry’s pension fund for gradiose projects to boost his own ego tells me to prove my patriotism by flying the national flag.

I am much releived that the war is over and that the LTTE is no more. But that is tempered by horror at the huge destruction it has brought to life and property. Therefore, I resisted being intimidated into flying the flag outside my door. It is certainly not party time for Sri Lanka with 200,000 people in internment camps who have little to go back home to.

Just a bit worried though that some flag waving patriot might come along and smash my windows ;-)

  191. Tissa Wije says:

    Mr Rainman
You brought out an interesting speculation. I have no sympathy for the departed set of criminals, but sadly in wars and politics force us to take sides. If 2nd world war ended with a German victory all unevolved races like us would be eliminated today. Was it Samaraweera and Lasantha duo who claimed responsibility for the negotiation of R 180 bribe yhat kept North out of election and brought this demise of LTTE. Samaraweera must be screaming at this turn of events.

  192. Pramod says:

Obviously the the top brass of LTTE was crushed and eliminated not giving chances of resurrection by the order from top.

The army happily executed it .

But the death of Prabhakaran appears to be a suicide, shooting himself after killing his family. All circumstantial evidence points to that.

  193. Sugune Pathirana -sugune@ozmail.com says:

Keri Balla. Kalu Balla Jeyaraj. Hukapiya thoge Ammata Keri Wesige Putha. Demala Huththige Putha

I feel nostalgic for Panchikawatte and Mariyakade Sugune…………..DBSJ

  194. Chris says:

Going through all the comments it shows how much of hatred there is between the two communities. One calling the other fool and idiots is senseless. The main thing now to focus is to see that the civilians who have been displaced injured and homeless be looked after. There does not seem to be any care or concern for humanity especially those innocent civilians! The UN secretary himself has said conditions are appalling in the camps and is it not the duty of the government to make life better for them?
I’m sure Anusha you would have read some time back how the Sri-Lankan army acted in Haiti and were asked to leave the country. There was no professionalism in the way they acted here too. The rift between the two communities has only been increase by unwanted comments and allegations. This could be seen in the comments that have been posted in this column. We are not here to judge each other. Our fate is in God’s hand and let us not forget that!

  195. Raju says:

DBSJ your emphasis on Sinhala and Tamil divide is unhelpful. On the process of establishing the rights of a people lost in a long time in colonial wilderness, some privileges Tamils enjoyed may have lost. In the independent Sri Lanka 90% of the government service was dominated by the Tamil population. Even the other 10% was occupied by the Christian domination. This minority population did enjoy this privilege disregarding the aspiration of majority people for a long time.

In a plural democracy these things will have to be changed. It does not mean Tamils or any body treated subservient. Basic human rights of all have to be enshrined.

At the meantime minorities should not be given a blank check to say any thing do anything against the majority and get away as they do now. When a Sinhalese speak for them is treated as a racist, but for a Tamil this is yardstick is not applied. And the Tamils after doing the major damage on racial relations are expected to be forgiven at once and accommodated immediately disregarding all the mayhem they may have done.

You should understand that it will take some time to see the reality and normalize relationships with these communities. In this regard the Tamils have to play a greater role to reach out to majority to seek normalcy. After all this destruction done by the LTTE involuntarily or involuntarily supported by the larger Tamil population we have to work hard to bring about this golden relationship. Please do not talk about divisions, but the similarity our two nations have to work together as Sri Lankans in the future.

DBSJ RESPONDS: I really dont understand what you are implying? Are you saying I am dividing the communities? Are you saying there is no “divide? right now? Are you saying we must not talk about a divide even if it is there? How does one reconcile and unite if one does not recognize there is a “divide”? if there is no “divide” what need is there for reconciliation?Speaking of a “divide” does not mean dividing or supporting division

By the way after attempting to take the moral high ground the rest of your comment suggests that there is a big divide. Your views smack of a holier than thou attitude that many people have towards the other community…………..DBSJ

  196. azdak Today says:

Referring to comment # 195 of the so-called Sugune who is an insult to “its” named. I am a Sinhalese. I am sure I could read, write and speak Sinhala including the obscene dialect of it, much better than this coward who is trying to display the confused state of mind and ignorance “it” has on this issue. The impulsive, inhumane methods that the LTTE pursued to resolve the problems of Tamils, managed to gain popularity and strength, destroying our whole nation because of this kind of morons. Wish this category of traitors were also cremated along with Prabhakaran.

Like one reader pointed out…the idea of separate land is an old ideology of the forefathers (50s~80s). We live in the global village now (90s onwards).

The challenges for the new and the next generations are quite global and local narrow-mindedness will only hinder progress.

As a recent university grad, i feel the extremists are the new “minority”. My hope is by the time my children’s generation take over this rubbish about how separate land would solve problems will be long gone.
